Customers may require Advance Ship Notification (ASN) for products that they have ordered. A criterion has already been established for what information needs to be included, how the information is to be transmitted and to who it needs to be sent.

Carriers, faced with larger shipping volumes, need to reduce their data processing bottlenecks. LTL carriers are now requiring a copy of the shipping manifest to be sent electronically. Electronic Data Interface (EDI) standards currently not in place, so each carrier solution may be different. Type of information and mode of transmittal may vary with each carrier.
